Fehmarn is a paradise for dog owners. Just imagine: four designated dog beaches, miles of walking trails along the coast, wide open fields in the hinterland, and an atmosphere so relaxed that even your four-legged friend will immediately feel at home. Here, you can walk along the beach with your dog in the morning as the sun rises over the Baltic Sea, cycle along shady country lanes at lunchtime, and relax together on the terrace of your vacation apartment in the evening.
Many of the vacation apartments and vacation homes on Fehmarn are dog-friendly, and your dog is even welcome in numerous restaurants and cafés. The island sees itself as a vacation destination for the whole family, including four-legged family members. If you Bicycles, Beach chairs, Boats or Rent water sports equipment you will find all the important information you need here.
Yes, extremely so. Fehmarn is one of the most dog-friendly vacation destinations on the German Baltic Sea coast. Many landlords welcome dogs in their accommodations, the beaches offer designated areas for four-legged friends, and on the cycling and hiking trails you will constantly encounter other dog owners who, like you, are exploring the island with their best friend.
There are only a few rules you need to follow, and they are perfectly reasonable. According to Section 32 (2) of the State Nature Conservation Act, you are not allowed to take your dog to beach areas with heavy bathing traffic from April 1 to October 31. At first glance, this sounds like a restriction, but in practice it simply means that you should use the designated dog beaches, of which there are several on Fehmarn. On these beaches, you and your dog can enjoy the water and sand to the fullest without disturbing anyone.
Sheep roam freely on many of the dykes, so you should definitely keep your dog on a leash here to avoid frightening the animals. The same applies to the island's nature reserves, where the native flora and fauna are protected. During the breeding season from April to July, there is a stricter leash requirement on some sections of the beach and in dune areas so as not to disturb nesting birds.
Of course, it is also important to use dog waste bags and dispose of the waste in the bins provided—this is a matter of course that benefits all vacationers and locals alike.
As long as you follow these few rules, nothing will stand in the way of a relaxing and restful vacation with your dog on Fehmarn.
Fehmarn offers four designated dog beaches where your four-legged friend can romp, swim, and dig to their heart's content. On all beaches, you should watch out for shells, algae accumulations, and sharp stones so that your dog does not injure their paws.
At the eastern end of the popular South Beach, the public and dog beach begins. The sand is fine and the water gradually gets deeper. This is perfect for dogs who want to enter the sea cautiously, but also for the brave swimmers among our four-legged friends. Here, humans and dogs can relax, play, and cool off in the water together. Just one small note: there are a few rocks when you enter the water, so it's best to be careful.
The dog beach on South Beach is particularly popular because it is close to amenities. There are parking spaces nearby, cafés and restaurants are not far away, and yet there is still enough space for dogs to run around and play.
To get to Dog beach nearby Meeschendorf drive or walk to the Meeschendorfer Strand parking lot. From there, head west and then east until you reach Camping Südstrand & Ferienresidenz Staberdorf. The fine sandy beach offers beach chairs, restrooms, and kiosks—everything you need for a relaxing day at the sea. Meeschendorf has a slightly quieter atmosphere than the south beach, perfect if you prefer a more relaxed setting.
You will find Grüner Brink dog beach east of the beach chair rental. Here, too, the sand is fine, and the Grüner Brink/Gammendorfer Strand parking lot is only a few hundred meters away. Restrooms and kiosks are also available. Grüner Brink is popular with water sports enthusiasts, so if your dog likes to watch kite surfers and sailors, this is the right beach for you.
The Dog beach Bojendorf in the west of Fehmarn is a beautiful natural beach located north of the local campsite. There are beach chairs, kiosks, and restrooms, as well as the Bojendorfer Strand parking lot. Bojendorf is somewhat more remote, making it perfect for those seeking peace and quiet and preferring a more natural stretch of beach.
The Katharinenhof cliffs is not a bathing beach or a designated dog beach, but it is wonderful for long walks. Here you can walk for miles along the water's edge, collect beautiful stones and shells, and with a little luck even find amber. The atmosphere is rugged and natural, perfect for dogs who love to sniff and explore.
The off-season in April/May and September/October is often more pleasant for dogs than the height of summer. Temperatures are more moderate, beaches are less crowded, and your dog can run around more without suffering from heat stress. The island is also quieter during these months, which can be particularly beneficial for anxious or older dogs.
In midsummer, you should avoid the hottest hours of the day at the beach and make sure your dog has enough drinking water and gets breaks in the shade. The light-colored sand can get very hot. Before walking on the beach, test the ground with your hand to see if it is too hot for sensitive paws. Many dog owners prefer to go to the beach early in the morning or in the evening in summer, when it is cooler and the light is particularly beautiful over the sea.
Autumn also has its own special charm: the beaches belong more to you and your dog again, the air is clear, and after a stormy day at the seaside, it's especially cozy to warm up in your vacation apartment.
Not every dog is immediately enthusiastic about salt water and waves. Give your four-legged friend time to get to know the new environment. Some dogs jump right into the water, while others need several visits before they dare to do so. Don't force anything; sniffing around on the beach, digging in the sand, and romping with other dogs are just as valuable experiences.
After bathing, you should rinse your dog's coat with fresh water to remove any salt residue. Salt water can irritate the skin and make the coat dull. Many dog beaches have fresh water showers that you can use. Also, make sure your dog does not drink salt water; bring enough fresh water with you to the beach.
For dogs with light-colored or thin skin, sunscreen can be useful for sensitive areas such as the nose, ears, and belly. However, only use sunscreen specifically designed for dogs, as human products may contain ingredients that are harmful to animals. A shady spot under a beach chair or parasol should also always be available so that your dog can retreat.
