Shopping on Fehmarn: A stroll through Burg's old town and across the island

The old market square in the heart of the old town, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting from one of the small cafés, and mouthwatering dishes. The Old Town of Burger on Fehmarn isn’t a place for frantic shopping. Here, you stroll along the streets and discover, in addition to all kinds of delicacies, shops that are truly one-of-a-kind.

Forget the big chains and faceless shopping malls. What makes Fehmarn special are the owner-operated shops with their unique stories. Here, the owners themselves will advise you, tell you about their products, and give you tips you won’t find in any guidebook. And best of all: Many of these shops aren’t just for shopping—they offer experiences that will enrich your vacation.

At their shop at 55 Osterstraße, you’ll find jams, sauces, chutneys, mustard, and pesto. Everything is free of artificial colors and preservatives, made with ingredients from the island and the surrounding region. The sea roses used in the sea rose jelly are hand-picked. Even the figs for the fig jam come from her own garden.

In addition to our own products, we offer a wide selection of licorice, Lübeck marzipan, rapeseed honey from the island, sea buckthorn products, and Baltic Sea salt. If you’d like to restock after your vacation, you can order through our online shop.

Knust: Craft Beer from the Island

Among locals, Fehmarn is known as “Knust,” the Low German word for the ends of a loaf of bread. That’s also the name of the island’s first craft beer. Behind the KNUST Brewery are craft farmers Kerstin and Jonathan, who brew with the finest ingredients and North German zest for life at their farm at Sundstraat 33.

There are currently seven varieties: from the dry Pilsner to the fruity Insel Pale Ale and the malty Brown Ale. The Sunset Ale, with its reddish-gold hue, tastes like a Fehmarn sunset. All beers are produced sustainably, using energy from the brewery’s own biogas plant and solar panels.

A visit to the brewery itself is especially worthwhile. During a brewery tour, the master brewer will show you around the production facilities, and during the beer tasting, you’ll spend about 1.5 hours sampling the varieties on tap. The cozy dining area, with its rustic Nordic ambiance, homemade tarte flambée, and oven-fresh pretzels, invites you to linger. In the summer, there are up to 300 seats available outdoors.

You can also find Knust beer at all Edeka stores on the island and at select restaurants. The brewery shop also sells T-shirts, hoodies, and glasses for fans.

Farm Stand: Fresh from the Island

Fehmarn isn't just a vacation island—it's also a proud farming region. At several farms, you can buy directly from the producers and get to know the island from a whole new perspective.

Osterhof Fehmarn

The Osterhof in Dänschendorf is much more than just a farm stand. Here you’ll find fresh products every day: honey from our own apiary, fruit spreads, fresh bread from the Altenteil farm bakery, seasonal vegetables, organic eggs, and meat from animals raised humanely. Plus, there’s a fine selection of regional artisanal products and lovingly packaged gift ideas.

The farm shop is open from March through the end of October. Families with children can combine their visit with pony rides, animal feeding, and a taste of real farm life.

Klausdorf Farm Café and Farm Store

At the Lafrenz Farm in Klausdorf, you can buy fresh products straight from the farm: homemade sausage and ham, eggs, seasonal vegetables, rapeseed honey from Fehmarn, and much more. The adjoining farm café serves homemade pies, cakes, and breakfast with freshly baked rolls every day.

Weekly Market in Burg

Every Wednesday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Burger Marktplatz transforms into a vibrant weekly market. At the stalls, you’ll find fresh local produce: fruit, vegetables, dairy products, fish, and meat. The market is larger in the summer and a bit smaller in the winter, but it’s always worth a visit. It’s best to combine your market visit with a stroll through the surrounding shops.

BorderShop Puttgarden: Shopping on the ship

The BorderShop at the ferry terminal in Puttgarden offers a shopping experience with a twist. Spread across more than 8,000 square meters of retail space on an old ferry, you’ll find a huge selection of spirits, wine, beer, confectionery, and Scandinavian specialties. The wine section alone features over 900 different varieties, plus around 700 types of whiskey. Many wines and spirits can be tasted right on the spot.

And if you'd like a little more

Fehmarn has plenty of options for your daily needs. In Burg, you’ll find supermarkets like EDEKA and REWE, as well as the Stolz department store on the market square, which offers clothing, sporting goods, and more across three floors. But honestly: it’s the small shops that make your shopping trip on Fehmarn special.

Practical tips for your day of shopping

Most of the shops in Burger's historic district are within walking distance of one another. You can easily explore them all in a single afternoon. Wednesday is especially worth a visit, as that's when the weekly market is held.

Thanks to the Sunday opening regulations, many stores are also open on Sundays during the season. Exact opening hours vary by season, so it’s best to check directly with the individual stores.

And if the weather isn't cooperating: A day of shopping through Burg's Old Town followed by a visit to a café is the perfect alternative to the beach. Between the shops, you'll find numerous Restaurants and Cafésthat invite you to linger.
