Dining on Fehmarn: Where to Eat, Drink, and Go Out

Fehmarn has more to offer in terms of cuisine than you might think at first glance. In Burg and Burgtiefe, you’ll find a lively restaurant scene featuring North German cuisine, fresh fish, Italian, and Greek dishes. Scattered across the island, the typical courtyard cafés invite you to enjoy homemade cake and fresh coffee—the perfect stop on a bike ride. At the harbor in Burgstaaken and along the coast, fish sandwiches are a must-try. And in the evening, beach bars on the south beach, cocktail bars in Burg, and even a club beckon.

This page provides an overview of the island's dining scene. For each category, you'll find a detailed subpage with all the information you need.

Fischbrötchen auf Fehmarn: Frischer Fisch direkt am Hafen

Fish sandwiches and seafood restaurants

Fish is as much a part of Fehmarn as sand is to the beach. At the harbor in Burgstaaken, at the Aalkate in Lemkenhafen, and along the beach promenade, you can get fish sandwiches, smoked fish, and fresh fish dishes straight from the Baltic Sea.

The options range from a quick fish sandwich to go to an upscale fish dinner with a view of the water. Some vendors, like Aalkate, smoke their own fish and also sell it over the counter for takeout. At Fischbutze on the beach promenade, you can customize your fish sandwich to your liking. And Eduard Grell on Breite Straße in Burg has been doing this for over 45 years.

Cafés and outdoor cafés

Farm cafés are a unique feature of Fehmarn. Scattered across the island are several farm cafés that serve homemade pies, cakes, and breakfast in a rustic setting. They are popular stops on bike tours and one reason why many visitors venture off the beaches.

The Hofcafé Albertsdorf is known for its high-quality pastries and Fehmarn-style Kröpel, the Hofcafé Bisdorf for its cake creations, and in Klausdorf, in addition to cakes, there is a farm shop selling regional products and a small petting zoo. On weekends and holidays, several farm cafés offer a breakfast buffet, which can also be a welcome change for those staying in vacation homes.

In Burg itself, you'll find more cafés serving specialty coffees and cakes—perfect for taking a break while strolling through town.

Both are open seasonally and are just as worth a visit during the day as they are in the evening.

In Burg, you'll find the Rapa Bar, open year-round, serving cocktails and mixed drinks; the Brandung, featuring burgers and sports broadcasts; the Medley, a beer bar with a dance floor; and the B1. If you're looking to really let loose, head to Club Loop right on the market square for themed parties featuring DJs from all over Northern Germany.

Another unique feature: With the Knust Brewery, Fehmarn also has its own craft beer.
