The Wallnau nature reserve is located in the west of the island of Fehmarn and encompasses a unique landscape of lagoons, wet meadows, and reed beds. The area in the west of Fehmarn covers 297 hectares (approximately 416 soccer fields) and was created by natural processes.
In 1866, an engineer attempted to drain the land to make it suitable for agriculture and livestock farming. However, the storm surge of 1872 tore down the dikes that had been built. By 1874, there was another flood, forcing the engineer to give up.
He subsequently sold the area to a spice merchant from Hamburg who had similar plans and created a pond complex by building dykes and intermediate dams. The area was abandoned again in 1963 and sold to NABU in 1976.
Wallnau was officially designated a nature reserve (NSG 89) back in 1977 in order to permanently protect the valuable habitats of numerous migratory birds and other animals.
